Before the grocery store. Before the supermarket. Before the can aisle existed at all — someone printed these by hand, one color at a time.

This is an original pumpkin can label — a circa 1920s–1930s stone lithograph for Dixie Brand, by J.J. Lassiter, printed by Piedmont Labels Co. of Bedford, Virginia (1919 to present, acquired by Smyth Companies in 1998). It has never been used. Never wrapped a can. It is New Old Stock in excellent mint condition.

The label is quietly beautiful. A cabin sits by a lake in the woods — pine trees, still water, a sky suggesting late afternoon. Decorative scrollwork borders the whole composition with the careful ornamentation of a label printer who understood that a pumpkin can was also a moment of contact between the brand and the buyer's eye. The scene has nothing to do with pumpkins. It has everything to do with autumn, and warmth, and the particular Southern stillness of a rural Georgia afternoon. Scarce. Getting harder to find. Two available.

Frame it as autumn or harvest decor, as Southern Americana, as a lakeside landscape piece, or alongside other pumpkin labels for a seasonal display. At 10.5 by 4.25 inches it suits a standard narrow frame and works beautifully in a kitchen, a dining room, or anywhere that welcomes the mood of the season.

A wonderful gift for a Southern Americana collector, a pumpkin or harvest decor enthusiast, a cabin and lake landscape lover, a vintage can label collector, or anyone who appreciates the art of a well-composed label from a time when every can deserved one.

A note on can label collecting: Original lithographic can labels from this era are far scarcer than crate labels — produced in smaller quantities, more fragile, and less often preserved. NOS examples like this one represent the finest of what survives from American food industry history.
